In Magnamar we enlisted the help of a few tough looking folks, and came up with a plan to get to Sandpoint as quickly as possible. One of the hirelings had a griffon he could fly there, so he left immediately. We were hoping that we were going to have a few days before the attack came.
With the use of teleportation spells, we were soon back in Sandpoint, and headed straight for the town hall to speak with the Mayor and make sure that the town was able to buckle-down or at least evacuate as soon as possible.
While in the town hall conversing with the town’s powers that be, something began to attack the big guy. No one was able to see where the attacks were coming from, but it seemed that they were originating from the barracks across from the town hall. The big guy and I ran over there to see what was going on, and there was no one to be found, and the guards that inhabited the building seemed wary of letting us in, and looked at us like we had lost out minds.
Maybe we had.
The next morning we awoke to alarms, crashing, and the sounds of pitched battle. Seems like we got here just in time! Reports were coming from all over town that groups of ogres, some with dire bears in tow, were attacking the town. We began to head towards the southernmost gate when a large shadow passed over our heads. The dragon.
We watched as the red beast breathed, setting fire to buildings left and right. We caught up to it at the town hall, and were able to engage it there. That did not last long, as it took to the sky once we hurt it. Feeling that it would be best to head out and take care of some of the ogres, we left the dragon. Seoni and the archer from the group we came with continued after it though, to pelt it with arrows.
We head back to the southern gate again, and came upon two ogres carrying sacks of people. When we tried to stop them, they THREW the people at us, killing some, if not all of them in the process. A short battle led to dead ogres. The mage’s imp was flying around the city and giving him reports of what was going on. Seoni and the other archer did their job well, as they put enough arrows into the dragon to scare it off. Once the dragon flew away, the ogres ran as well.
The imp reported that one group of orgres in the north was carrying a large rock away from the lighthouse area of Sandpoint. The mage took to the sky and went after the ogres with the rock, while we head that way on foot.
On the way, we were once again attacked by something that we couldn’t see, and then an extraplanar creature of some sort materialized out of the air. A short fight later, the creature was dead, and we still didn’t know where the mysterious attacks were coming from. But we pressed on.
Later we found that the mage was able to apprehend the ogres, and managed to capture one, and get his hands on half the rock they stole. We don’t know why they needed it at this point. It was also at this time that the gravity of what had actually happened in Sandpoint started to hit me. The two ogres we fought had PEOPLE. Other groups left with cart-loads of them, and sacks of them. We didn’t kill the dragon… we only stopped two ogres, who killed most of who they were holding, and we retrieved a ROCK that was being taken away. But so many people were lost. The town was on fire, and buildings all over were destroyed.
It is safe to say that we failed Sandpoint this day. Utterly.
